The Healing Power of Storytelling

With Vanessa Jackson
Saturday, March 26, 2011 9:30am-5:00pmTuition: General Registration, $125; Early Registration, $95 (ends February 2, 2011); Student Registration, $75
Training Description
Storytelling is utilized cross-culturally as a tool for transmitting knowledge, orienting members to cultural norms and practices, preserving (and even reclaiming) history and as a critical means of communication and connection. But as Richard Stone, author of The Healing Art of Storytelling, notes, “our culture has been devastated by the loss of storytelling as a tool for communicating, passing on values, learning and most importantly, healing.” He refers to this loss as “destorification.” The purpose of this training session is to revive the storytelling tradition as a tool for healing and connection. Participants will engage in a series of experiential and writing activities designed to bring forth individual, family and community stories that serve to connect us to a broader vision of co-creating space for reviving hope and facilitating healing for individuals, families and communities. The training will be centered on the exploration of transforming powerlessness into power utilizing The Healing Questions developed by the trainer. The workshop will start at the individual level since, as Be Present founder, Lillie Allen, states, “If I am not afraid of me, then I will not be afraid of you.” Learning to acknowledge and honor our disowned stories of self, creates a space for us to celebrate our gifts and to better hear and understand the disowned and celebrated stories of others. Skill building and experiential activities will spiral out to capture and clarify family, community and global stories on the themes of power, hope and healing.
Training Objectives
- Participants will identify and share individual, family and community stories which reflect their personal values related to power, hope and healing.
- Participants will demonstrate knowledge of the Healing questions and how to utilize them for change in clinical and community settings.

ADVANCED
INTENSIVE
Tuscany has always been a special place for us. For many
years we have dreamed of offering an advanced narrative workshop in
the wonderful atmosphere of Central Italy. Now that dream is coming
true.
We plan to join together with up to 12 experienced
practitioners of narrative therapy from October 10th
through 14th 2011, just outside San Gimigmano, Italy for a
5-day intensive workshop under the Tuscan sun. Our friends, the
Rossi family, have made their highly-rated bed and breakfast, Podere
Ponte a Nappo, exclusively available for this workshop. We will not
have to share the space with anyone else.

We plan to meet from 9 to 12 and from 4 to 7 each day, leaving a
long siesta period for walks in the town or countryside, excursions
to Siena, the Chianti country, or other points of interest, or just
luxuriating in the beautiful surroundings.
Price: Early Registration (Paid before July 4th), $650; General Registration (Paid after July 4th), $700
